Geico Insurance :

The Government Employees Insurance Corporation has its offices in Maryland and is an American Geico auto Insurance company. After State Farm, it is the second largest auto insurer in the United States. Geico car insurance quote is a wholly-owned Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary which, as of 2017, provides coverage for more than 24 million motor vehicles owned by more than 15 million policy holders. In all 50 US states and the District of Columbia, GEICO writes private passenger car insurance. Via local brokers, called GEICO Field Representatives, the insurance provider sells policies directly to the customer through licensed insurance agents over the telephone and via their website. Its mascot is a Cockney accented gold dust day gecko, voiced by English actor Jake Wood from 2005 until his termination due to a 2015 wage dispute. In popular media, GEICO is well known for its ads, having made several advertisements meant to attract audiences.

GEICO also issues home insurance, as well as the total coverage offered by Geico renters insurance although the scheme responsibility is passed to third-party entities. As the "insurance company", GEICO oversees the plans and has a dedicated customer service unit that handles the land and umbrella plans.

Leo Goodwin Sr. and his partner, Lillian Goodwin, founded GEICO in 1936 to offer car insurance directly to federal government employees and their families. Goodwin has been operating for USAA since 1925, an insurer that specializes in insuring only military personnel. After rising as high as a civilian could go in the USAA's military-dominated hierarchy, he decided to start his own business. With $25,000 of their own money and $75,000 from Fort Worth, Texas-based banker Cleaves Rhea, with legal assistance from future GEICO CEO Lorimer Davidson, the Goodwins funded the formation of GEICO.

Geico car insurance 's initial market plan was based on Goodwin 's experience at USAA, on the premise that government workers, as a collective, would represent a less volatile and more financially secure pool of insured individuals relative to the general population. GEICO has long been a commercial corporation not affiliated with any U.S. political agency, despite the inclusion of the term "political" in its name.

In 1937, Geico claims was transferred by the Goodwins from San Antonio , Texas, to Washington , D.C. And the company was reincorporated as a D.C. Since finding that their business strategy will fit well in the position with the largest federal employee concentration.

In 1948, the Rhea family sold its 75 percent interest in GEICO to a group of investors led by the Graham-Newman Partnership of Benjamin Graham, who took 50 percent (worth $712,000 at the time); this transaction unintentionally defied the SEC law, which in 1949 forced Graham-Newman to sell a portion of their shares, resulting in GEICO becoming a publicly listed firm at ~$27 / sh. By 1972, Graham-Newman 's interest in GEICO ultimately resulted in a position worth $400 million, which was Graham-Newman 's best investment by far and overshadowed the remainder of their total assets.

In 1951, Warren Buffett, then a graduate student at Columbia University under Benjamin Graham, interviewed Lorimer Davidson (then a VP) and called GEICO "The Protection I Like Best." The market capitalization at GEICO rose almost 50 times from 1948 to 1958.

Goodwin resigned in 1958 and was replaced by Lorimer Davidson, who raised the insurance premiums of the company from $40 million to $250 million during his lifetime at a cumulative rate of 16 percent annually. Davidson retired and Ralph Peck (President and COO)[1] and David Lloyd Kreeger (Chairman and CEO), who was one of the other founders in 1948, succeeded him in 1970.

In 1974, under the guidance of Kreeger, after real-time access to computerized driving information became available across the United States, GEICO began insuring the general public. GEICO was briefly the fifth-largest U.S. auto insurer at this time. By 1975, it was clear that GEICO had risen way too quickly (during the recession of 1973-75) as it recorded a loss of US$ 126.5 million.

In 1975, Kreeger resigned, but he served as chairman of the executive committee until 1979, when he was named honorary chairman, and Peck left in 1976 after the share price of GEICO dropped from $42 to $5. A coalition of 45 insurance firms decided to buy up a fifth of the policies in order to keep GEICO from failing, and it was compelled to pursue a public listing (thus diluting current stockholders) to raise funds to cover claims. In order to place GEICO on the road of rehabilitation, it took five years and a major reorganisation.

In addition to automobiles, GEICO has sold various forms of insurance, including homeowner's insurance from 1962 to 1996. From 1975 to 1985, a related agency, the Government Employees Life Insurance Corporation (GELICO), sold life insurance. Although GEICO has since concentrated on its core competency of car insurance, it utilizes its existing direct distribution infrastructure to sell insurance for homeowners and other forms of insurance offered by other firms.
